Obiettivi dell’iniziativa e principali attività formative previste
1. Develop a Critical Understanding of Open Science and RRI
Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of Open Science and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) principles, including public engagement, gender equality in research, open access, and ethical considerations in scientific practices. They will critically reflect on how these concepts shape contemporary research and innovation policies in the EU and Latin America.
2. Apply Open Science Tools and Practices
Through hands-on activities, participants will learn to utilize key Open Science tools such as open-access publishing, open data repositories, and alternative science communication strategies. They will practice using these tools in ways that enhance transparency, reproducibility, and societal impact in their own research.
3. Foster Collaborative and Inclusive Research Approaches
Participants will develop skills in interdisciplinary and cross-regional collaboration by engaging in discussions on emerging values in science, such as indigenous knowledge and ethical research practices. They will explore strategies to build equitable research partnerships between EU and Latin American researchers, strengthening international scientific cooperation.

Tipologia dell’iniziativa e target di riferimento
Summer / Winter School
Since 2015, the European Union has championed Open Science as a fundamental value in shaping scientific careers. Alongside the evolving concept of Open Science, another key principle—Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)—has been embedded in research and innovation policies. RRI encompasses Open Science while also promoting broader ethical and societal considerations in research.
Both concepts have been systematically integrated into EU research policies, serving as core drivers for all funded research. As a result, the EU has gained significant experience in fostering research activities aligned with RRI principles, including public engagement, gender equality in science, Open Science practices, and the advancement of scientific education.
During this Summer/Winter school, various activities will be conducted to explore and apply the principles of RRI. Early-career researchers—who are in the formative stages of developing their skills and academic reputation—will be encouraged to reflect on their roles as scientists both within and beyond the research community. Several hands-on workshops will introduce key tools and practices used in the EU and Latin America, such as open data, open-access publishing, and innovative science communication methods.
Plenary sessions will highlight emerging values in contemporary science, such as engagement with indigenous knowledge systems and the critical examination of historically dominant yet unjust scientific approaches from the 20th century. Through these discussions, participants will strengthen their networks and foster meaningful collaborations, ultimately shaping shared research agendas between early-career researchers in the EU and Latin America.
